Set up Maya Shipping Protection
Last updated October 30, 2026
Maya adds a shipping protection offer to your store's own cart drawer and cart page. Shoppers choose it before checkout, the fee is priced at checkout, and you keep all of it. Most stores are live in about ten minutes.
Get started
Install Maya and open it
After you install Maya, open it from Apps in your Shopify admin. A short setup runs first: Welcome, Your fee, Your look and Go live.
Maya creates a Shipping Protection product to carry the fee. It is kept out of your store's search and sitemap, needs no shipping and tracks no inventory. Leave it in place while Maya is installed.
Turn on the app embed
In Go live, choose Turn on in theme editor. Your theme editor opens at App embeds with Maya shipping protection ready to switch on; save the theme and come back. Maya then shows in your cart drawer and on your cart page.
Set your fee
Open Protection and the Offer tab. Choose a fee type:
- Fixed: the same fee on every order.
- Percentage: a percent of the cart subtotal, with a minimum and a maximum.
- Tiers: a fee for each cart value range. You can import tiers from a CSV.
You can also round fees, make protection free above a cart value, set a fee per market, cap the coverage per order, and choose when the offer shows (cart value, markets, and products that never get it).
Pick a design and write the text
On the Design tab, pick one of eight templates, set an accent colour or match your theme, upload your own icon, or add custom CSS. On the Content tab, edit the title, description, checkout button text and decline text, and add translations for your store's languages. The preview shows each change in the cart drawer, on the cart page and on a phone.
No template adds protection for the shopper. They always choose.
Check where it shows
Maya places itself above the checkout button on popular themes. Open your store, add a product to your cart and check the drawer and the cart page.
If you use a custom theme or another app's cart drawer, go to the Placement tab and choose Map placement. Your store opens with Maya's mapper: add a product, open your cart, tap your checkout button and save. Map the drawer and the cart page, on desktop and phone if their layouts differ.
Publish your protection policy
On the Content tab, under Protection policy page, choose Edit policy page. Set what is covered, the claim window and how to claim, then publish. Maya writes the page to Online Store › Pages and links it from the widget's Learn more. The first time, Shopify asks you to let Maya manage pages.
Show it after checkout (optional)
- In your checkout editor, add the Maya order protection block to the thank-you page. It tells shoppers “Your order is protected” and links your policy.
- In your theme editor, add the Protection badge block to your product page.
Fulfill the protection item automatically (optional)
On the Fulfillment tab, turn on Auto-fulfill protection. Maya marks the protection item fulfilled when the order is created or paid (you choose), without notifying the customer, so it doesn't sit in your unfulfilled orders. You can also tag protected orders.
When a protected order goes wrong
Maya doesn't run claims or pay them; you keep the fees and decide. When a shopper reports a lost, stolen or damaged parcel:
- Open the order in Shopify. A protected order has the Shipping Protection item, and its
_maya_choiceattribute readsprotected. - Check the claim against your policy page (the claim window and what is covered).
- Refund the order or send a replacement from your Shopify admin.
Switching from another protection app
Maya's Switch page finds Route, Navidium, Captain, ShipInsure, Seel, Corso, Simply, Sam or Shipcheck on your store and walks you through moving over in five steps: what it found, matching your fee, going live with Maya, turning the other app off, and tidying up.
Removing Maya
Turn off the app embed in your theme editor, then uninstall Maya from Settings › Apps. Shopify switches off Maya's pricing, its widget and its thank-you block. The Shipping Protection product and the policy page stay in your store until you delete them.
